Dietitian's tips for diabetes and blood sugar control

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all for everyone with diabetes. The nutrition recommendations really depend on how your body reacts and how much blood sugar rise after a meal plan. Here are some general tips that may help you to manage your blood sugar:


1. Eat 3 meals spaced out properly throughout the day. Timing of your meals is important!


2. You may need a daytime snack if your meals are spaced out for more than 4-6 hours apart.


3. Reduce added sugar (sugary beverage, dessert and etc).


4. Eat more vegetables! Include a variety of vegetables in your diet.


5. Include adequate fiber to help control your blood sugar.


6. Choose more whole grains (such as quinoa, oats, brown rice, wild rice, barley and etc).


7. Include healthy fat (such as fish, nuts, avocado and etc) as part of your meal plans.


8. Balanced meals and portion control are the key!


9. Consult a registered dietitian for more customized nutrition tips.


Healthy eating is definitely a key component in managing blood sugar. You can talk a registered dietitian to guide you and help to design meal plans to control blood sugar and reduce the risks of complications from diabetes.
