A warm, comforting apple crumble made with naturally sweet apples, rolled oats, coconut flakes, and cinnamon. This easy homemade dessert is full of flavour, provides dietary fibre, and requires no added sugar in the apple filling!

Apple crumble is one of my favourite desserts to make, especially during the fall when apples are in season. There's something comforting about the combination of warm, tender apples, fragrant cinnamon, and a golden, crispy oat topping.

Healthy Apple Crumble with Oats & Coconut Flakes

Preparation time: 15 minutes

Baking time: 40–50 minutes

Servings: 6

Oven temperature: 350°F (175°C)

Ingredients

Apple Filling

  • 6 medium apples (approximately 750–900 g), cored and sliced

  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

  • 1½ teaspoons ground cinnamon

  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

Crumble Topping

  • 1 cup rolled oats (90 g)

  • ½ cup all-purpose flour (60 g)

  • ¼ cup unsweetened coconut flakes (20 g)

  • ¼ cup melted coconut oil

  • 3 tablespoons maple syrup

  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease an 8-inch square baking dish.

Step 2: Prepare the Apples

Wash, core, and thinly slice the apples.

Step 3: Mix the Apple Filling

In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples, lemon juice, cinnamon, and cornstarch. Toss until the apples are evenly coated. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish and spread evenly.

Step 4: Prepare the Crumble Topping

In a separate bowl, combine the rolled oats, all-purpose flour, coconut flakes, cinnamon, and salt. Add the melted coconut oil and maple syrup. Mix with a fork until the ingredients form moist, crumbly clusters.

Step 5: Assemble the Apple Crumble

Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apple filling. Avoid pressing it down too firmly, as this helps create a lighter, crispier texture.

Step 6: Bake

Bake uncovered for approximately 40–50 minutes, or until the apples are tender, the filling is bubbling, and the crumble topping is golden brown. If the coconut flakes begin browning too quickly, loosely cover the baking dish with aluminum foil.

Step 7: Cool and Enjoy

Allow the apple crumble to cool for 10–15 minutes before serving. This gives the filling time to thicken slightly.

Enjoy warm on its own or with a spoonful of plain Greek yogurt!
